1998 Vatican 500 Lire silver coin commemorating the Exposition, or public display, of the Shroud of Turin. B/U condition, includes original plush case and certificate. Sculpted by Floriano Bodini. The earliest documented references to the Shroud date back to the middle of the 14th century; at the time the Shroud is reported to have been in Lirey, France. Unconfirmed tradition has the Shroud previously venerated in Constantinople, whence it was brought to Europe at the time of the Crusades. In 1453 it became property of the Savoy family and brought to Turin. Since 1694, except for a few interruptions, it has been kept in the beautiful chapel built by Guarini between the Cathedral and the Royal Palace. In 1983 it was bequeathed to the Holy See by Humbert II of Savoy.
