Pope St. Fabian (236-50) Uniface Medal

Obverse: Pope St. Fabian facing right, halo above. A relatively modern restitution medal. Eusebius related the story that, when the clergy were considering a successor to Anterus, a dove settled on Fabian's head, designating a man who was in no one's thoughts as the choice of the Holy Spirit--legend though it is, reflects the widespread conviction that Fabian was a leader given by God to the church.
