1782 silver medal for the trip of Pope Pius VI (1775-99) to Vienna. Obverse: Bust right. Reverse: Legend in seven lines. 24mm across, lovely toned XF+, a little rough by the edge.
One of the few popes to leave Rome since the sixteenth century, Pius VI ventured to Vienna to plead the emperor Joseph II for revocation of legislation limiting papal power. Although Pius VI received a rapturous reception by the faithful en route, the emperor refused to abandon his program.
An example of this medal sold at auction in October 2010 for $303.00 (Euro 218.50).
