Pope Clement XI facing right, wearing cassock, cap and stole decorated with Albani emblems/Large sun with human features shining on a landscape; above, a scroll with the inscription CUNCTIS CLEMENS. Large--and heavy--old cast bronze, 96mm across, fairly sharp with a nice, glossy brown patina. One of the earliest works of engraver Ermenegildo Hamerani with the rare imagery in papal numismatics of the "sun-face," perhaps inspired by the medals of Louis XIV. Roma Resurgens #149.
The motto of this early medal, "Clemency for All," established the tone of Clement XI's reign. The young pope--he was only 51 when elected--was exceptionally genial and fair-handed to all with whom he came in contact.
Extremely rare. Ex-James Elmen, private sale.
