Silver medal, 41.9mm across, for the Holy Year 1725. Obverse: Pope Benedict XIII to the left wearing tiara and cope. Reverse: Standing pope at center holds hammer and breaks down brick wall blocking the Holy Door; at left stand cardinals; at right are kneeling and standing pilgrims; above, two cherubs support a scroll inscribed DOMUS DEI ET PORTA COELI. A very handsome original medal by Giovanni Hamerani and Ermenegildo Hamerani. NGC AU 50. The Holy Door of St Peter’s is opened on the Christmas Eve preceding the Holy Year by the Pope who then closes it on the following Christmas Eve.
