Magnificent medal of Pope Pius IX depicting the interior of St. Peter's Basilica, perhaps issued for the opening of the Ecumenical Council. 81mm across, bronze over white metal, blow on reverse, about uncirculated.. Includes a very interesting plush case marked REGIA ZECCA ROMA. In 1869, the Kingdom of Italy renamed the "Papal Mint" the "Royal Mint."
