Official Vatican Annual Medal, Pius IX anno XXII (1867) on the reconstruction of the Piazza Quirinale. Obverse: Pope left. Reverse: at far left, a glimpse of the Quirinale Palace; next to it the Palazzo della Consulta, a papal law court designed by Ferdinando Fuga; next to that, the obelisk with the ancient statues of Castor and Pollux and their horses.
In 1866, Pius IX leveled the irregularly sloping piazza with a large terrace and new stairway. A Latin inscription in the plaza reads:
During the Supreme Pontificate of Pius the Ninth,
that the approach to the Quirinale Hill
might be made more conveniently accessible,
by removing ancient foundations,
by gathering the water pipes into a subterranean conduit
and by banking the slope and building a retaining wall against it
the Senate and People of Rome
opened and paved a nobler street
in the year 1866
