Innocent XI's greatest aim and achievement was to mobilize resistance to the Turks advancing into Europe. Towards this end, Innocent XI brought about the alliance between Emperor Leopold I and John III Sobieski of Poland which led to the relief of Vienna (September 12, 1683).
