Clement X 1671 Washing of the Feet Medal

Obverse: Clement X facing right. Reverse: Kneeling Christ at right washing the feet of apostle Peter. A small die break on the obverse and die rust on the reverse point to a late strike. The Washing of the Feet medal was instituted circa mid-16th century and issued until 1870. Every Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday) the pope re-enacts Christ's action at the Last Supper by washing the feet of twelve ordinary people who would also receive the medal in gold and silver.
