Benedict XVI's first pastoral journey took place in April when he traveled to Malta for the 1950th anniversary of shipwreck of Paul of Tarsus. In May he went to Portugal for the tenth anniversary of the beatification of two of the three visionaries of Our Lady of Fatima. In June he traveled to Cyprus, the first Pope to visit this island, where he met with the Archbishop of the Orthodox Church to renew and strengthen Catholic-Orthodox dialogue. In September he made his fourth journey, this time to the United Kingdom where he had a historic meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury. During the travel in England, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Cardinal John Henry Newman, an Anglican priest who became a Catholic. In the month of November, his final journey took him to Spain where he went to the shrine at Santiago de Compostela and, afterwards, the Sagrada Familia church, elevating it to a minor basilica.
