2012 Vatican sheet of six stamps paying homage to the "smiling pope," Pope John Paul I, on the centenary of his birth. John Paul I actively participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965, an experience which brought him into the public eye of the Catholic Church. He was Patriarch of Venice and on March 5, 1973 he was made cardinal by Paul VI. He left Venice for the last time to participate in the conclave and, on the second day of voting, he was elected Pope on August 26, 1978. In only thirty-three days he touched the hearts of people who remember him with great love and affection.
